The LIFE programme is the only instrument that the European Commission has dedicated exclusively towards supporting and developing the EU Environmental policy. Since its inception in 1992, it has become the main financial tool in the European Union to support initiatives that contribute towards improving nature conservation and reducing the impact of human activity in the Community territory. Every year, member states submit several proposals to Brussels for them to be minutely examined. Only few of them are selected to be jointly funded through this Programme, having proved their higher quality.
Valencia City Council is one of the public institutions within the European Union with the largest number of LIFE projects awarded and the Devesa-Albufera Service is the most successful department, being in charge of five initiatives to date aimed at the environmental improvement of l'Albufera Natural Park, the projects include: LIFE Dune; LIFE Enebro; LIFE Biocompost; LIFE Eco-rice, LIFE Ecolight and LIFE Environmental Seduction.
